I traveled in Australia from the 14th of April 2004 to the 21 of July 2004 which is a bit more than 3 months.
People from many countries don't need a visa if they intend to stay less than 3 months. They just need to get a paper called ETA that you can buy together with your airplane ticket.
I would have probably applied for a working holiday visa if this visa existed before I had started my trip. The thing is that you have to be in your own country to apply for this visa. Unfortunately I was in New Zealand when this visa was created between France and Australia.
Anyway two months before I had no idea I will go there as my first idea was to immigrate in New Zealand... Well everybody can change its mind !
I traveled along the east Coast from Sydney to Cairns. This is by far the most popular route trip.
I visited (in chronological order): Sydney, Blue Mountains National Park, Warrumbungles National Park, Byron Bay, Surfer Paradise, Brisbane, Mooloolaba, Noosa, Burnett Heads, Dingo, Airlie Beach, Whitsunday islands, Dunk Island, Mission Beach and Cairns.
As in NZ, I did wwoofing during almost all my travel. If you want to know more about wwoofing, just have a look on the New Zealand blog!
Thus work was quite different from NZ as I made 3 websites!
I would have loved to visit more places like Ayers Rock (the big red stone), Darwin, the Far North Queensland... But the country is as big as my wallet was small!
I didn't have much money for this trip as I didn't planned it ahead so I choose the bus company Oz Experience (Kiwi Experience and Fiji Experience sister) which is kind of cheap.
The others good points with this kind of bus is the possibility to meet many other young people and to go in some places (Dingo...) where other “standard” companies don't go.
Thus my opinion about it is not fully positive. Average age is quite young (closer to 18 than 25), you don't have that much liberty considering you know exactly where you go when you buy the ticket and you don't have much opportunity to meet people from the country. Just ask to the 80% of English guys
or the 20% of Canadian people on the bus...
