I traveled in Malaysia from the 4th of March 2006 to the 4th of April 2006 which is 1 month (include 2 days in Brunei).
This is the third stop of my Asian trip 2005/2006 which include in chronological order India, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.
I visited in chronological order the following places:
- in Borneo Island : Kuching, Bako National Park, Semenggoh Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, Miri, Mount Kinabalu National Park, Kota Kinabalu, Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park
- on the peninsula : Malaka, Kuala Lumpur, Taman Negara National Park, Perhentian Islands, Cameron Highlands and Penang Island.
The best for transportation is to use buses and minibuses/vans belonging to private companies which allow you to avoid spending one night in transit in a city wit not much to see. In example it's very easy to do Taman Negara->Perhentian Islands or Perhentian Islands->Cameron Highlands in one day by taking bus and boat.
For hostel I paid between 8 and 65 RM a night. Sometimes it was a bed in a bunk sometimes my own room.
Prices of accommodation are very different from place to place. A bed in a bunk cost me 46 RM a night in Mt Kinabalu National Park but the same things cost me only 10 RM In Taman Negara National Park and even 8 RM in Penang!
For 65 RM I had a nice little chalet with bathroom and a wonderful view on the ocean in Perhentian Islands.
A simple meal cost between 6 and 10 RM.
In total I spent in Malaysia 704 euros in 29 days which is 24.3 euros a day and which is much more than what I planned (15 euros a day).
This total also include the two flights between the peninsula and Borneo (64 euros) and two dives in Perhentian Islands (46 euros).
A huge part of my budget went into bakeries which offer many delicious items!
My opinion about Malaysia: if you go there, go for the marvelous national parks and for the beautiful small islands. In KL you will probably only notice the giant twin towers. Otherwise cities have nothing really exciting...
